Setting Out Engineer
Our setting out engineers play a critical role in translating design intent into precise, physical control on the ground. They ensure every structural component is positioned and aligned correctly, providing confidence to the whole construction team.
Key Responsibilities
-
Plan Interpretation & Coordination
They review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings — converting design data into workable coordinates and digitally preparing setting out information. -
Control Network Establishment
They set up and maintain the primary control network (benchmarks, grid lines, reference points, and datum levels) that will guide all subsequent works. -
Precision Layout & Marking Out
Using instruments like robotic total stations, GPS rovers, and laser levels, they place stakes, pins, and markers to define the exact location of foundations, columns, cores, slabs, drainage, and other structural elements. -
Verification & Quality Checks
After layout, they carry out regular checks to confirm that elements remain within tolerances. They detect deviations, issue corrections, and maintain logs for quality assurance. -
Interface Coordination
They liaise with structural engineers, contractors, and site teams to ensure trades (e.g. formwork, reinforcement, utility works) align correctly with setting out. -
As-Built Validation
They record as-built deviations from original design, update drawings accordingly, and provide digital deliverables for handover. -
Documentation & Reporting
Every action is logged: site diaries, setting out certificates, deviation reports, daily logs, and QA checklists. -
Health & Safety Compliance
Ensuring layout work follows safety protocols, checking site conditions, setting safe markers, and coordinating around live construction zones.
